G-Braves Seeking Series Win Against Charlotte

The Gwinnett Braves were routed by the Charlotte Knights on Wednesday night, as the Chicago White Sox affiliate pounded out 17 hits en route to the 8-2 victory. This season, Charlotte has taken three out of the five games the two teams have played against one another. With a victory Thursday night by Gwinnett however, they would tie the season series, 3-3, thus far.
Julio Teheran endured his worst performance of the year, working just four and one-third innings for the loss. The righty allowed four runs off seven hits and struck out a season-low one batter as he moves his record to 2-1 following Wednesday’s loss.
Ernesto Mejia (pictured above) has a 16-game on-base streak going for him. The big first baseman has reached base in every game he’s played this season and will be looking to extend his streak to 17 consecutive on Thursday. Josh Wilson, who moved up to the No. 7 slot in the batting order for Thursday, has five hits in his last two games as the shortstop continues to find his rhythm.
Currently, the G-Braves possess one of the best records in the International League with 13 wins and seven losses. The only team’s with better records are the Boston Red Sox Triple-A affiliate, Pawtucket Red Sox who are 15-6 and the Toledo Mudhens (Gwinnett’s next opponent) who are 14-6 on the season as they represent the Detroit Tigers.
Gwinnett still leads the IL South Division, but the margin has slimmed after the Knights have taken three of five games from the G-Braves in the last week. Gwinnett now leads Charlotte by just two games in the standings and an 8-game road trip looms on the Gwinnett horizon following Thursday’s game. Norfolk and Durham have a combined 27 total losses between them already and are no closer than five and a half games out of first place in the IL South Division. The Durham Bulls actually won the division last season, but reside in last place early on this year with their league-leading 15 losses.
