Thursday is “Education Day” with a 10:35 a.m. start time from Coolray Field, so be at the ballpark early for some coffee, donuts and morning baseball. Saturday night began an 11-game homestand in 10 days for the Gwinnett Braves. Game No. 6 from Coolray Field is set for Thursday morning and it should be a good one between Gwinnett and Buffalo.

Wednesday the G-Braves fell to Buffalo yet again, 4-1, after fighting through a tie ballgame for most of the evening. The Bisons won their third straight against Gwinnett after scoring three runs and breaking the 1-1 tie in the seventh inning. Jeurys Familia was outstanding for the New York Mets affiliate, as he moved his record to 3-1 on the season. Yohan Flande was handed his second loss of the season for Gwinnett.

The G-Braves have now lost six of their last seven games, but are still resting comfortably in first place of the International League South Division at 19-13. Gwinnett does not own the best record in the league anymore after their latest skid, however they are just two games behind the IL-leading Pawtucket Red Sox (21-13).

Buffalo (20-13) is surging after going 7-3 in their last 10 games and staring up in the standings at the Red Sox Triple-A affiliate, trailing by just a single game. The Bisons possess the second best record in the IL and are loaded with pitching talent in 2012. The G-Braves have already faced the Mets No. 2 and No. 4 stud pitching prospects in their system in the current series and wound up losing to both of them.

Stefan Gartrell was named the International League Batter of the Week as he continues his torrid pace. The slugger is batting over .400 in his last seven games, including four home runs, 10 RBI and an .850 slugging percentage. Gartrell rose his batting average from .165 to .216 in a matter of days.

Currently Jose Constanza is on a 10-game hit streak that he will be looking to extend on Thursday against Jeremy Hefner. On the season, the G-Braves left fielder is hitting a team-high .348 with 13 RBI and five stolen bases. Luis Durango is also on a tear of his own this season. The speedster stole three bases in Wednesday’s game pushing his season total to 18 stolen bases in 19 attempts for the lead in the IL.

Todd Redmond (2-3, 3.69) is on the mound for the G-Braves Thursday morning from Coolray Field, as he will be trying to avoid the sweep for Gwinnett. Redmond will be opposing Buffalo right-hander Jeremy Hefner (3-1, 1.64) on getaway day. It will be a special 10:35 a.m. first pitch from Lawrenceville as we celebrate Education Day for all school children.
