Series Preview: Gwinnett Braves (26-37) vs. Columbus Clippers (30-32)

Gwinnett Braves were shutout for the second time this season in their last contest against the Rochester Red Wings, 11-0. The Braves suffered their third loss of the series and fourth in five games. Gwinnett enters play 13.5 games behind Durham (39-23) in the North Division.

Hitters- Tyler Pastornicky extended his hitting streak to ten games on Friday night, going 2-for-4 at the plate. The infielder’s double digit streak is the longest of the season and is three games shy of tying his all-time mark of 13 games. During the streak, the right-handed hitter is batting .405 (17-for-42) with two doubles, two homers, 10 runs scored and seven RBI…Stefan Gartrell has returned to Gwinnett and provided instant offense. In 10 games, the outfielder is hitting .333 (8-for-24) with two homers and seven RBI. He is Gwinnett’s All-Time home run leader with 47 dingers…

Pitchers-
Brandon Beachy
will make his second rehab start for the G-Braves in the series opener. The right-hander is about two starts away from returning to the major leagues, as the June 18th doubleheader against the Mets is the likely date he will return to a big league mound. In the meantime, he will try to give the Braves a lift with a great performance on Saturday night as the bullpen threw 8.1 innings on Friday night.

G-Bites- After the loss last night, the Braves dropped their record to 4-7 against left-handed starters… Currently own a 22-30 record against righties and will have a chance to cut the margin this weekend, facing four northpaws.

Columbus Clippers
The Clippers enter the contest on a bit of a slide, dropping their last three games and nine of their last ten games. They are currently in second place in the West Division, 11.5 games behind the front-running Indianapolis Indians (42-21).

Hitters-
Jeremy Hermida
is on a tear. In his last 10 games, the left-handed hitter is batting .406 (13-for-32) with four runs scored, two homers and five RBI. In 55 games, he is hitting .262 (51-for-198) with ten dingers and 33 RBI. He has great plate discipline, leading the International League with 46 walks. The former Miami Marlins first rounder (11th overall) is a local boy. He graduated from Wheeler High School in Marietta, GA… Offensively, Columbus ranks 12th in the league in hitting (.251), 8th in runs scored (266) and second in strikeouts (534)…

Pitching-Heralded hurler Trevor Bauer will get the nod in game one of the series. The starter has fared better in the major leagues this season, posting a 1-2 record with a 2.76 ERA in three starts with the Cleveland Indians, while going 2-2 with a 4.63 ERA with the Clippers. His strikeout rate is phenomenal, striking out 49 batters in 46.2 Triple-A innings.
