The Gwinnett Braves dropped four straight against Rochester during the weekend, falling to last in the division and now own the worst record in the International League.
Tyler Pastornicky has taken over the team lead in batting average, hitting .314 (72-for-229) on the season. He is tenth in the International League in batting average. In 56 games, he has four homers, 24 RBI and a team-high 35 runs… Ernesto Mejia clubbed his team leading 16th homer on Saturday night. He is second in the league behind Bisons’, and former Gwinnett Braves, Mauro Gomez (18). He is also second in the IL with 54 RBI on the season.
Gwinnett Ace Omar Poveda will take the ball in game one. In his last outing, he tossed six scoreless innings against the Columbus Clippers, picking up his fifth win of the season. He is seventh in the league in ERA (3.01), third in WHIP (1.11) and fifth in batting average (.225)… Reliever Wirfin Obispo has been unhittable in his last 11 outings. In 11 relief appearances, he has tossed 14.0 scoreless frames, the longest scoreless streak posted by G-Braves’ reliever this year (Cory Rasmus had a 10.2 innings pitched streak from 4/12-5/11). On the season, he is 1-2 with a 3.71 ERA with 42 strikeouts in 34 innings pitched.
The Braves are off to a slow start in June, going 4-11 in the first half of the month. The team has done well hitting, as they hold a .277 batting average in the month, but the pitching staff has been rocked. Entering tonight’s contest, the staff has posted a 6.42 ERA…
The Bisons enter the series five games back of the first place Pawtucket Red Sox and two games back of the Wild Card leading Norfolk Tides.
The Bisons have one of the best lineups in the entire league, boasting a combined .275 (612-for-2223) batting average and recording a league-best 76 homers… Jim Negrych leads the squad in hitting with a .344 (73-for-212), while clubbing three homers and driving in 29… Luis Jimenez is right on his tail, batting .341 (75-for-220) with 13 homers and 54 RBI. Former G-Brave, Gomez will be a load in the middle of the lineup, as he leads the league with 18 homers.
Buffalo pitching has been their crutch all season, as they hold the worst ERA in the league. They are the only squad in the league that allows more than five runs a game, 5.04 ERA… Former Toronto Blue Jays Ace Ricky Romero will pitch game three of the series. The left-hander has been off his game since last year, but has major league stuff when he locates around the zone. In his last start, he went a season-high six innings, scattering two hits and not allowing a run at Pawtucket.
