Triple-A Homerun Derby
Ernesto Mejia has been named one of six participants to the 2013 IGT Triple-A All-Star Homerun Derby. The field was announced Tuesday afternoon, which includes Brock Peterson, Johnny Monell, and Matt Davidson of the Pacific Coast League and Chris Colabello, Mauro Gomez of the International League.
Mejia is the second G-Brave to be selected for the Home Run Derby. In 2011, Stefan Gartrell won the derby after hitting 16 dingers in Salt Lake City, UT. He was outclassed by high-schooler, 17-year-old Kayden Porter from nearby Spanish Fork (Utah) High. Using a metal bat, Porter hit 18 homers in three rounds, including five in the final round, to steal the crowd and the post-derby attention from Gartrell.
Both players squared off in the finals, but Gartrell prevailed by clubbing seven homers.
Mejia will have his chance to bring back the crown to Gwinnett on Monday night as the Derby is scheduled to start at 10:00PM EDT. In last night’s contest, in his first game back since tweaking his hamstring, Mejia slugged his team-leading 22nd homer of the year in the eighth inning.
Mejia and the G-Braves will take the field tonight, Wednesday, July 10 at 6:05 PM. Cody Martin (2-1) will take the ball for Gwinnett. Martin dropped his last start, giving up five hits and one run in 5.0 innings. He will look to get back on the win column against the Tides. In his only career start against the Tides, he went 7.0 innings, scattering three hits and allowing two earned runs.
