One of the best players in Major League Baseball, Evan Longoria will be stopping by Coolray Field tonight and Friday for as part of the Tampa Bay Rays rehab assignment with the Durham Bulls. Thursday night, one of MLB’s best fielders and hitters will be opposing the Braves man of the hour, Randall Delgado. The G-Braves right-hander has been rumored in trade talks the last 48 hours, but will start amidst the rumors tonight for Gwinnett at 7:05 p.m. from Coolray Field.

For the season, prior to tearing his hamstring, the Gold Glove third baseman was batting .329 with four home runs, 19 RBI, 15 walks and 15 runs scored in 82 at-bats with the Rays. He was on pace to have another fantastic, all-star worthy season, as his three-year averages would suggest; .274 batting average, 29 home runs, 107 RBI, 75 walks, 10 stolen bases and 91 runs scored.

“Rays third baseman Evan Longoria was told Wednesday that, at this point, he likely cannot make his hamstring injury any worse at this point, so he will head to Durham to begin a minor-leaguie rehab assignment Thursday, according to the Tampa Bay Times. Manager Joe Maddon told reporters that Longoria would work as strictly as a designated hitter and will likely need just three to four games to get back in shape, though his return will depend on when Longoria feels ready,” CBS sports reports.

Catching Up With The G-Braves Skipper, Dave Brundage

Brundage Pregame Interview for Thur 04-05-12

The G-Braves lost their first game of the regular season Thursday night, 4-3, after a hard fought extra-inning affair. The reigning International League South Division Champion Durham Bulls took an early 2-0 lead, but the G-Braves worked their way back into the game late.

The Tampa Bays Rays prized prospect Alex Cobb struck out eight Gwinnett hitters through five innings of work. He allowed one earned run off six hits and left the game in line for the win.

For the G-Braves, Todd Redmond was nearly as sharp, working four innings of two-run (one earned) ball. The G-Braves righty struck out five Bulls through four innings, en route to the no decision.

Gwinnett tied the game in the eighth inning on a one-out double by Stefan Gartrell. Neither team would score again until the 12th inning. Gwinnett plated one in the top half of the frame, but Durham answered back with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning to grab the win, 4-3.

With the loss, the G-Braves move their 2012 record to 0-1, but will be looking for their first victory of the season Friday night when Erik Cordier (0-0, 0.00) takes the mound for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch from Durham, North Carolina.

The G-Braves loss Thursday night was their first-ever defeat on Opening Day since moving to Gwinnett from Richmond, VA in 2009.

If you missed Tony Schiavone and Judd Hickinbotham’s interview with the G-Braves manager Dave Brundage before Thursday’s game, have no fear, we have it here for your listening pleasure.
