Right-hander Cody Martin will make his debut for the Triple-A Gwinnett Braves tonight, June 18, against the Buffalo Bisons, Triple-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, at Coca-Cola Field in Buffalo, NY at 7:05 PM. He will take the roster spot of Tyler Pastornicky, who was recently called up by the Atlanta Braves, replacing the injured Evan Gattis.
Martin was a seventh round draft pick in the 2011 First Year Player Draft out of Gonzaga University. During his four-year career with the Bulldogs, he went 16-13 with 3.76 ERA. He recorded 271 strikeouts in 253.2 collegiate innings. His senior season, he dominated the collegiate circuit, posting a 2-1 record and leading NCAA Division 1 baseball with a 0.86 ERA.
After signing with the Braves, the Dos Palos, CA native was assigned to short season Danville. In eight relief appearances, he tossed nine scoreless frames and recorded three saves. He was moved to Low-A Rome during the middle of July. In 14 games with the R-Braves, he went 1-0 with a 1.48 ERA, while recording six saves. His success in the bullpen and command of four pitches, allowed the organization to try him as a starter in 2012. He responded by going 12-7 with a 2.93 ERA in 107.1 innings for High-A Lynchburg. The 12 victories tied for second amongst Braves’ farmhands, while he recorded 123 punch outs for the HillCats.
Cody, the son of former Atlanta Braves pitcher Chuck Martin (1984-1985), has a four pitch repertoire. He relies heavily on a low-90’s fastball with late run and mid 80’s slider. He also throws a curveball and a changeup, which he uses to keep hitters off balance.
He will have his hands full, facing the No.2 offense in all the International League.
