The Atlanta Braves selected Lucas Sims with the 21st overall pick in the 2012 MLB Amateur Draft on June 4. Sims is a hardthrowing right-hander from Brookwood High School out of Snellville, Georgia. The 6-foot, 2-inch, 195-pounder was named the Georgia Region Pitcher of the Year and led his team to the 2012 Georgia State Championship Game with an 8-1 record alongside his nearly flawless 1.19 ERA.
Sims was ranked the No. 29 overall prospect entering the 2012 MLB Draft according to Baseball America. Last summer, the righty pitched for the USA Baseball 18U team in the Prospect Classic. The Lawrenceville native also was a three-year starting pitcher and shortstop that was committed to the baseball powerhouse Clemson University.
“We are happy to be able to draft a Georgia boy, especially one from our backyard who is a great athlete with a great arm and great make-up.” said Tony DeMacio, the Braves’ director of scouting. “We are looking forward to getting him into the fold as soon as possible. We think we have a top of the rotation type of player.”
The 40-round First-Year Player draft will conclude Wednesday, June 6 at 12:00 p.m. with rounds 16 through 40. The Braves will select 21st in rounds three through 40 to conclude the festivities.
