McCann Rehabs, Braves Continue Slide
The Gwinnett Braves returned to Coolray Field, but couldn’t get back on track, dropping their fifth straight game.
The Braves outhit the Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre RailRiders 7-to-5, but could not come up with the timely hits, going 1-for-3 with runners in scoring position. Brian McCann, in his first rehab start with the Gwinnett Braves, punched the only run in with an RBI single in the eighth inning. After a two-out double by Todd Cunningham, McCann delivered with his first hit of the night.
In six rehab games, through Single-A Rome and Triple-A Gwinnett, he is hitting .333 with three homers and eight RBI. The six-time All-Star is not worried about his hitting, but looking to regain full strength in surgically repaired shoulder.
“The last thing I’m worried about is my hitting,” said McCann to Barrett Sallee in his post-game interview for MLB.com. “I feel great swinging the bat. I’m ready to go.”
His bat is not the only thing MLB ready, as he called a great game for the first six innings of the night. Entering the seventh inning, starter Sean Gilmartin was tossing a no-hitter. However, the left-hander surrendered a leadoff single to Melky Mesa and everything went south from there. He would be tagged for three runs in 6.2 innings of ball, suffering the loss.
Joey Terdoslavich had another big night, going 3-for4 and raising his average to the .333 mark. He leads the team in hitting, hits (37), doubles (13) and total bases (64).
The Braves will turn the page from last night’s loss, sending Yohan Flande (1-1, 4.43 ERA) to the mound tonight. The southpaw has been solid as a starter, posting a 1-1 record with a 3.14 ERA in 2013. He will face Graham Stoneburner (1-1, 3.00 ERA). The right-hander is 14th round draft pick out of Clemson University. He features a fastball, change up and a slider. In 2011, Baseball America ranked him the No. 17 prospect in the Yankees organization.
Tonight’s game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

The G-Braves Minute
The Gwinnett Braves (8-10) failed to make it three in a row, dropping game three of the four-game set to the Charlotte Knights, 4-3 on Sunday afternoon in front of 6,676 at Coolray Field. The largest crowd of the 2013 season came out to see first baseman Freddie Freeman, as he took the field
in his final rehab start for the Gwinnett Braves.
Freeman went 0-for-2 with an HBP before leaving in the seventh to get on a plane and head to Denver, CO to meet the rest of his Atlanta teammates.
The G-Braves ended their current two-game winning streak, as Dusty Hughes (0-2) gave up the game-winner in the seventh inning. After giving up a single and retiring the next hitter, Hughes gave up two walks and HBP to allow a run to cross the plate, making it 5-4 Knights.
Offensively, the Braves could not get going against the Knights bullpen, as they threw five innings of shutout baseball. Deunte Heath (1-0) picked up the victory, while Ramon Troncoso recorded the save.

Game Preview: G-Braves (3-0) vs. Knights (0-3)
The Gwinnett Braves (3-0) are off to their best start in franchise history after sweeping a twin bill form the Charlotte Knights (0-3) on Saturday night.
The G-Braves got started early, as Ernesto Mejia capped a four-run first inning with a three-run home run in Game 1. The first baseman was not done, as he homered again to left field, helping the G-Braves win the first game of the twinbill, 6-4.
In Game 2, David Carpenter tossed 3.2 innings of shutout ball, holding down the Knights offense through five innings. The Knights would get on the board on a solo shot by Seth Loman, but it was not enough as the G-Braves prevailed behind strong pitching from Carpenter and Yohan Flande. Sean Kazmar’s two-run single in the second inning proved to be the game-winner, as the G-Braves took Game 2, 2-1.
Today, the Braves finish off their home stand as Tim Corcoran (0-0) makes his season debut against Simon Castro (0-0).
Corcoran is entering his 14th professional season. In 429 MiLB appearances (56 starts), he is 58-52 with a 4.26 ERA. From 2005-2007, the right-hander made 40 appearances (17 starts) for the Tampa Bay Rays. He went 5-9 with a 4.97 ERA in 130.1 innings. Braves Cut, G-Braves Add Former First Rounder
On Tuesday afternoon, following their Spring Training game with the St. Louis Cardinals, the Atlanta Braves made 10 cuts to their Spring Training roster. With the World Baseball Classic slowing and minor league camp breaking into exhibition games, the Braves cut their roster to 48.
There was one move that directly correlates with the Gwinnett Braves, pitcher Cory Rasmus was assigned to Triple-A Gwinnett. The former first round pick (36th overall) of the 2006 First-Year Player Amateur Draft out Phenix, AL, was the first player to be assigned to the G-Braves roster this season.
Rasmus, the younger brother of Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Colby Rasmus, has been with the Atlanta Braves organization for seven years. The once highly-touted prospect endured a season-ending injury in 2007, which has slowed his career. However, after struggling as a starting pitcher from 2009-2011, Rasmus was moved to the bullpen last season with Double-A Mississippi and had his best season yet.
In 50 games, he posted a 3-5 record with a 3.68 ERA and seven saves. His strikeout rate was promising, as he fanned 62 in 58.2 innings. He will look to continue his climb to the big leagues as formidable back end guy.
G-Braves Bites:
The Braves also cut the following players, right-handed pitchers Juan Jaime and Aaron Northcraft were optioned to Double-A Mississippi.
While, Pitchers Ryan Buchter (LH), Yohan Flande (LH) and Gus Schlosser (RH), catchers Luis De La Cruz, Braeden Schlehuber and Jose Yepez and infielder Joe Leonard were re-assigned to minor league camp.
Buchter, Flande and Yepez all spent time with the G-Braves in 2012.
With 21 days left before the season opener against the Charlotte Knights at 7:05 p.m. at Coolray Field on April 4, there will be more additions to the G-Braves roster in the next few weeks. 2013 Spring Training – Weekly Update
Spring Training is underway and the Atlanta Braves have got off to a slow start, losing three of their first four games. With new faces around camp and early departures for the World Baseball Classic, the Braves are not worried about win-loss records, but concerned with building a continuity to prepare for an exciting summer of baseball.
With several regulars leaving for the WBC, it has allowed for former 2012 G-Braves to make an impact in Lake Buena Vista, FL. Twelve of 15 Braves that wore the G-Braves uniform in 2012 have seen the field this spring.
Joe Terdoslavich made a big splash, hitting a solo-homer on Feb.22 against the Detroit Tigers. His home run was the lone run for the Braves, as they were stymied by seven different pitchers in a 2-1 loss.
Tyler Pastornicky has flourished since Andrelton Simmons left to Taiwan to prepare for the WBC. In his last two games, Pastornicky has picked up two hits and an RBI.
The other three positions players, Ernesto Mejia, Jordan Parraz and Jose Yepez have one hit each through the first four games. Jose Constanza, who is having visa issues in the Dominican Republic, is yet to report to camp.
On the hill, the race for five went from luke-warm to steamy. Sean Gilmartin and Julio Teheran matched each other on Sunday afternoon with two scoreless frames. Both hurlers picked up two strikeouts and allowed one base runner each. Gilmartin gave up a single, while Teheran walked one.
If the race for five was not enough, the bullpen battles are starting to get hot. Cory Gearrin has tossed two scoreless frames, allowing one hit and recording two strikeouts, while Dusty Hughes hurled a perfect frame with one strikeout.
Lefties Ryan Buchter, Yohan Flande and Daniel Rodriguez have struggled through the first few days of camp. Buchter has allowed two runs on three hits in one inning. Flande has given up six runs on seven hits in two innings of baseball. Rodriguez’ control issues continue to give him trouble, walking three and giving up three runs in his lone appearance.
The players return to action today at 1:05 p.m. at Champion Stadium in Lake Buena Vista, FL against the Washington Nationals.

Education Day Game at Coolray Field This Morning

The Norfolk Tides scored three times in the ninth to tie the game and three more times in the 11th to steal a 6-3 win from the Gwinnett Braves on Monday night at Coolray Field. Miguel Batista pitched 6.0 scoreless innings for the G-Braves and left with a 3-0 lead, but the bullpen failed to hold the advantage.
With Gwinnett leading 3-0, they went to their bullpen and Cole McCurry following the brilliant 77-pitch, 50-strike effort from Batista. McCurry worked 2.0 innings before exiting with runners on first and second base with nobody out in the ninth. Andy Russellentered the game and proceeded to allow three runs to cross the plate, two to McCurry’s line, as Norfolk tied the game at 3-3.
Ryan Flaherty walked and Joe Mahoney singled off McCurry to start the ninth. Bill Hall welcomed Russell by driving home the first run of the game for Norfolk, singling past first baseman Josh Kroeger to cut the deficit to 3-1. Endy Chavez then singled home Mahoney, and Luis Exposito grounded into a double play that scored the tying run.
McCurry worked 2.0 innings and allowed two runs on two hits. Russell followed him, lasting 2.0 innings with one run on two hits.
Ryan Buchter entered the game to start the 11th inning for the G-Braves. The left-hander walked Jamie Hoffmann to lead off the inning, then misfired to first for a throwing error after a Chavez bunt. Following a spectacular play by Buchter to force Hoffmann at third on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Exposito, a walk to pinch hitter Ryan Adams loaded the bases. Steve Tolleson drove home the go ahead run with a sacrifice fly to center, and L.J. Hoes put the game on ice with a two-run single off shortstop-turned-reliever Josh Wilson to give Norfolk a 6-3 lead.

Buchter (L, 0-2) was credited for 0.2 innings, as he surrendered three unearned runs on no hits and three walks. Wilson worked 0.1 innings and surrendered just the one hit to Hoes.
Greg Burke (W, 2-1) worked 2.2 scoreless innings en route to the victory for Norfolk. The right-hander struck out two without yielding a walk through extra innings. Zach Phillips (S, 6) closed the door on the G-Braves for the save, recording the final out of the game. The Tides bullpen allowed just one run over 5.0 innings of relief on the night.
Batista was outstanding for the G-Braves on Monday, working 6.0 innings of scoreless baseball. The veteran right-hander surrendered just three total hits and struck out a season-high seven hitters, leaving the game in line for the victory.
Rusty Ryal was the lone offense to start the ballgame, doubling home Ruben Gotay in the second and fourth innings respectively, giving Gwinnett a 2-0 lead after four innings. Gotay walked with one out in the second, then scored from first on the double by Ryal. In the fourth, Gotay scored from first once again, this time after his single off Norfolk starter Zach Clark.
Jose Constanza walked to lead off the G-Braves’ seventh inning against Villarreal, extending his on-base streak to an International League leading 37 straight games.

Tommy Hanson vs Todd Redmond at Coolray Field
The Atlanta Braves right-hander Tommy Hanson will have his first minor league rehab start on Sunday at Coolray Field for Triple-A Gwinnett. The Braves righty landed on the 15-day DL for Atlanta with lower back soreness. It is undetermined how many starts Hanson will need prior to heading back to the Braves rotation, regardless the Triple-A offense’s due to face him certainly have their work cut out.
The former G-Brave leads the Atlanta team in wins with his 12-5 record, alongside a 4.29 ERA in 22 starts this season. Hanson has also registered 114 strikeouts to 54 walks in 126.0 innings of work in the National League East Division. Opponents are batting .267 off the right-hander alongside his 1.44 WHIP.
G-Braves fans had the luxury of witnessing Tommy Hanson start for Gwinnett 11 times during the 2009 season. That year, Hanson went 3-3 with a 1.49 ERA, including 90 strikeouts and just 17 walks yielded in 66.1 innings pitched for the Triple-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves.
Photo courtesy of 2009 Gwinnett Braves staff photographers
Sunday’s game against the Louisville Bats becomes even more interesting for Hanson as he is set to face former Gwinnett star Todd Redmond, who will be making his first start against his former teammates. On the season, the Bats possess one of the worst records in the International League, but they have shown some fight in the second half of the season. Either way, both sides will be primed and ready for Sunday’s showdown.
Redmond spent four years in Triple-A Gwinnett with the Atlanta Braves affiliate. The right-hander was one of the more consistent pitchers in Gwinnett franchise history. During the 2012 campaign, Redmond led the pitching staff in a number of categories, including wins, strikeouts and innings pitched. It should be a great match-up between a pair of workhorse’s on Sunday afternoon.
The Gwinnett Braves (53-68) take on the Louisville Bats (48-73) in game three of the four-game series on Sunday night at Coolray Field, first pitch scheduled for 5:05 PM. Right-hander Tommy Hanson (0-0, 0.00), on a Major League rehab assignment, is scheduled to start for the G-Braves against former Gwinnett right-hander Todd Redmond (8-8, 3.36) of the Bats. Listen to the broadcast on WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM in Gainesville, Georgia with Tony Schiavone calling the play-by-play.
